DIY Fall Flavors Healthy Dog Biscuits

Are there any doggies out there that don’t love crunchy biscuits? This wholesome homemade dog biscuit recipe made with oat flour and applesauce is super-easy to make for everyday treating, training, or snacking. It’s also a great way to help stretch a bag of their favorite freeze-dried raw treat, with each bone/cookie containing 2-3 treats. Hard and crunchy, these biscuits may also even help keep their teeth clean!

Turkey hearts add rich organ meat nutrients and flavor, but you can easily substitute turkey heart with chicken breast treats. As for cookie shapes, we made small bone-shaped dog biscuits with this recipe, however you could use any shape mold or simply form round cookies with your hand or a spoon (dough is too sticky to use cookie cutters).  

Recipe makes about 24 to 30 small (1” x 1-2”) cookies.  

Fall Flavors Healthy Dog Biscuit Recipe

• 2 to 3 Tbsp diced freeze-dried turkey heart treats (alternately use chicken breast treats)*
• 2 cups oat flour**
• ¼ tsp salt***
• 1 egg
• ¼ cup chicken stock
• ¼ cup applesauce

*Variation: use 100% Chicken Breast Topper instead of treats for smoother dog biscuits.

**You can make oat flour by grinding up rolled oats in the blender or food processor.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

In a large bowl, combine all ingredients together until they form a heavy dough.

*** In video above, we make the turkey heart biscuits with 3/4 tsp of salt. When reviewing the recipe, Dr. Sinatra said, “why so much salt?” So, our recipe now calls for 1/4 tsp instead of 3/4 tsp.

Grease your cookie pan of choice with butter, and press dough into each well in your cookie mold tray, filling each mold almost to the top. If you’re not using molds, simply make 1” cookie rounds with your hands and set them out, leaving about 1” of room in between each, on a tray that’s greased or lined with parchment paper.

Bake for about 20 minutes – until the cookies are golden brown on top. Cool and store in an airtight container for about a week; refrigeration not necessary but will help extend shelf life.
